A few of these labs are included with Wendell Odom’s CCENT/CCNA ICND1 100-101 text. Those are a great way to get some "hands-on" experience with IOS. Then I found out there was a HUGE compilation of them in this one package, so I bought it immediately. I have access to some real IOS equipment at my job, but the engineer isn’t going to let me near the production stuff (our real Cisco system) until I’ve demonstrated some competence, first. I’m almost there. Plus, I can’t break this stuff or knock anybody offline, no matter how hard I try.

The labs are separated into ICND1 and ICND2 (books 1 & 2 of the CCNA series). You can sort them by topic, too. There are a bunch of labs for the CCENT book and a bunch more for the second book. The labs are critical because unless you have a photographic memory, the only way to remember the commands is to use them repetitively.

You can run the labs over and over, and that’s what I’m doing to remember all those infernal commands, LOL. Also, you can just play around in the simulator, it’s wide open for whatever you want to do inside the given lab setup. The system is recording most of what I do in the labs, which makes this interesting in an instructor-led environment, too.

The labs start out as short introductions to the chapter topics, they call them Skill Builders. The steps guide you, telling you exactly what to do. Later, configuration and troubleshooting labs tell you what needs done, but expect you to come up with the commands yourself. Help is available when you get stuck, and the goal is to be able to perform the tasks without it. If you can’t perform the task without help, wait a day or two then go back and do the lab all over again. Repeat until you know the commands. It’s a solid design.
